On the morning of June 9, 2004, President Hu Jintao who was paying a state visit to Poland met with Polish Prime Minister Marek Belka, Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament Józef Oleksy and Speaker of the Senate Longin Pastusiak.
President Hu said to Prime Belka that China regards Poland as a good friend and good partner. To develop China-Poland friendly cooperative partnership is compliant with the fundamental interest and common aspiration of both peoples. We are willing to consolidate and deepen bilateral exchanges and cooperation in various fields on the basis of mutual respect, treating each other as equals, seeking common grounds while putting aside differences and complementing each other on advantageous terms. When talking about economic and trade cooperation, President Hu noted that with a year-on-year increase of 43% in bilateral trade volume last year, Poland has become one of the largest trading partners for China in Central and Eastern Europe. The potential for bilateral economic cooperation is waiting to be further tapped and the two sides can make joint efforts in this respect. China enjoys a huge market and Polish entrepreneurs are welcomed to seize opportunity to tap the Chinese market more actively. The two sides should think of new ways to expand two-way investments and cooperation. Chinese companies can take part in the infrastructure construction in Poland and China welcomes the business community of Poland to participate in China's initiatives to develop its western region and to rejuvenate its old industrial bases in the northeastern part of the country. The two sides may also fully leverage the mechanism of mixed council on economic and trade affairs and enhance direct links and exchanges between the business communities of the two countries so as to explore new channels for cooperation.
Prime Minister Belka said China is not only playing an increasingly important role in international economy but is also exerting more and more influence on Poland's economic development. The cooperation documents signed between the two sides during President Hu Jintao's visit have given the direction for further strengthening and expanding economic cooperation and trade between the two countries. The result is very encouraging. We welcome Chinese businesses to participate in the infrastructure construction of Poland and expect more Chinese enterprises to enter the EU market through Poland.
When meeting with the Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament Józef Oleksy, President Hu said China's National People's Congress (NPC) has been conducting active exchanges and cooperation with the Polish Parliament and the specialized agencies have established broad communication. As the largest specialized groups in respective mainstream institutions and with extensive memberships, broad representation and active involvement, the China-Poland Friendship Group in China's NPC and the Poland-China Friendship Group in Poland's Parliament have made considerable efforts in promoting understanding and trust between the two peoples. We hope the legislative bodies of the two countries can continue to strengthen their friendly exchanges and cooperation so as to better contribute to the promotion of the all-round development of China-Poland relations.
Oleksy said that China's rapid development was a favorable factor for efforts to safeguard world peace and stability. Poland and China share identical views on many significant international issues and there is a bright prospect for bilateral cooperation in politics, economy, education, culture, science and technology. Poland's Lower House of Parliament would like to contribute to continuous development of Poland-China relations.
Speaker of the Senate Longin Pastusiak has visited China for six times and is familiar with various aspects of china's conditions. Hu Jintao said to him that while maintaining close exchanges with China's NPC and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Poland's Senate often serves as a bridge for enhanced cooperation between businesses of the two countries and has made positive contributions to the consolidation and development of China-Poland relations. He added that both China and Poland are conducting market economic reform and strengthening legal system building. China's NPC and Poland's Parliament should exchange experience and learn from each other in improving legislation and supervising administration, which is very conducive to the enhancement of the two countries' legislation. China hopes the two sides will continuously deepen exchanges and cooperation between the two legislative bodies at various levels through all channels so as to strongly promote the all-round development of friendly cooperative partnership between China and Poland.
Pastusiak indicated that Poland would like to work together with China to continuously strengthen mutual exchanges between the two legislative bodies in a bid to promote Poland-China all-round cooperation. Pastusiak mentioned in particular that currently international situations are changing rapidly and we have to set up a new international political and economic order so as to safeguard world peace and achieve common development. China and the EU should play a creative role in this process.
On the same day, Hu Jintao also met with staff of Chinese Embassy, employees of Chinese institutes and companies as well as representatives of overseas Chinese and Chinese students in Poland and briefed them on the current economic and social development in China and his current visit, encouraging them to contribute to development of China-Poland friendly relations.
